Rated 2 out of 5 by from Okay for rough work I will start off by saying that I have now returned this item. I needed it as a quicker alternative to pillar drilling/jig drilling dowel holes. However, the drill failed to perform on a number of points. I found that the castings were of reasonable quality, but the thumb screws holding your angle and depth were not strong enough to be relied upon. The drill is powerful, and the supplied bits are very sharp. The machine feels robust in hand, and is relatively easy to use, the sprung plunger mechanism feels like it would pass the test of time and put up with some abuse. Unfortunately, the drill bits on my machine were misaligned. There is a clear plastic drill guide with three lines (middle line for centering) Upon investigation, and numerous tests, I found that they were 0.75mm right-of-centre. Resulting in dowel holes that are 1.5mm offset from eachother when lining up mating pairs. Having researched this issue and found that it is common with this machine, I made a new drill guide, and got the alignment down to around 0.25mm. However, the drill holes were also misaligned vertically, meaning that one is slightly higher than the other, perhaps 0.25mm - 0.5mm. mating pairs will never align with flush face surfaces with this misalignment. There is no adjustment available on the machine for this vertical misalignment, or the aforementioned left/right misalignment. I needed a machine that could produce precision dowel holes in mating pairs that would not require excessive further finishing to make good, this machine was unable to perform this duty. I would only recommend a machine of this build quality if you are doing rough work, it is not a precision tool. Toolstation were able to refund me with no problems, and I will continue to shop there.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good but needs adjustment Generally happy, it needs a bit of adjustment to get it to align properly, once this is done it will be a very useful tool. I read a lot of reviews, many quite negative before buying, however having now used it, I think it is a useful tool and a fraction of the cost of a domino.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Diamond in the rough. Most reviews of this machine are lousy, with good reason. It has a powerful motor, good bearings and a sound gearbox. Accuracy is another matter. It absolutely will not give the out the box precision that you'd get with the Mafell doweller or a domino, but for £120, what were you expecting? However, this machine has a lot of potential and is a good starting point for creating a good tool. You will need to replace the plastic knob on the fence with a wing nut type so that you can tighten it properly, or the angle on the fence goes squiffy. Take off the fence assembly and smooth the slides, they are pretty bad. On mine, the two drills are aligned square and parallel to the fence, but I believe this is rare. You will also need to make a new perspex window in the fence and scribe it with centre lines as they are ALL about 0.55mm offset to the left. This means you'll get a nice, even 1.1mm error in all your joints. These fixes will only take a couple of hours to do, there's a youtube that explains it all.It is a real shame that they didn't sort it at the factory because Triton would sell thousands of these at £180-200 if it were accurate. Dowels are very cheap compared with Festools dominoes, and available from just about anywhere.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good for the money At this price, you should only expect so much. To get perfect precision of fences to give perfectly accurate joints would require much more money spent. I purchased this item after reading many negative reviews online along with a few more balanced reviews. After purchase, I would agree with the more balanced views. Basically, this is capable of creating strong, joints very quickly and simply. The horizontal alignment of the joints is not perfect in normal use and therefore the joints created are not 100% in line for furniture grade work, although perfectly fine for general construction. Some of the issues mentioned online can be mitigated for. One example is that the jointer has two pads on the jointing face. If your item is too narrow and one of the pads does not sit on the face of the wood, the joint will be significantly out of line. This can be fixed by adding a temporary (or permanent) spacer closer in - eg with a piece of card to keep the jointer parallel. The spring is very strong, making it difficult to push the jointer into the work, but the effort also forces the jointer hard against the work piece so has some benefit. I have seen a video online where someone replaces the spring, adds narrower pads and does some work to improve the alignment of the two dowels. At the moment, I am happy with this jointer. I have a dewalt biscuit jointer which is of higher quality but probably cost nearly double the price. Although less acurate, this dowel jointer creates stronger joints than the biscuit jointer, which is more aimed at assisting alignment than strength of joint.
